The Department of Fine Arts of Union Public Schools in Tulsa, Oklahoma seeks an enthusiastic, student-centered, team-oriented, growth-focused individual for the role of Color Guard Programs Director. Candidates with balanced pedagogical, recruiting, administrative/organization, and artistic/design skillsets are sought for overseeing a comprehensive fall and winter color guard program that includes grades 6-12, including curricular course offerings. With student engagement at the core of the district’s focus, candidates for this position will have strength in balancing the resources of the community, parental involvement, and collaboration with colleagues to create meaningful learning environments and world-class performance experiences for students.
The Union Guard program has a rich history of excellence, including national championship awards in both the WGI and BOA realms. With support from the school district, the community of parents and patrons, and the Union Bands program, the Union Guard is primed for immediate success. As a subprogram of the Union Bands, the Guard exists in the well-diversified offerings of progressive & comprehensive concert bands, jazz bands, percussion ensembles, symphony orchestra, and other chamber music opportunities, serving approximately 800+ students.

An ideal candidate for the Union Color Guard Program Director may possess experience with some or all of the following:
- Coordinate and develop all aspects of the comprehensive color guard program, including:
o daily curricular guard elective classes: 7th Grade, 8th Grade, and High School.
o marching band color guard program (including all rehearsals and performances)
o multiple-ensemble winter guard program (including all rehearsals and performances)
o spring and summer camps for educating and attracting future students
o Promote a safe, secure, and healthy place, within which the students’ well-being is of utmost importance.
o Recruit and retain students to the color guard program.
o Create and maintain a positive, educational, artistic experience for students of the guard program.
o Develop and maintain student leadership within the guard program.
o Cultivate relationships with parents and attract capable volunteers.
o Embrace the district’s strategies, core values, mission, and commitment to diversity, equity & inclusion.
o Serve as program coordinator for the winter guard competitive shows.
o Serve as chief guard choreographer and artistic contributor for the marching band creative design team.
o Manage and mentor a staff of color guard technicians.
o Manage daily attendance and grading of curricular guard classes.
o Oversee and maintain inventory of guard equipment and costumes.
o Manage and adhere to color guard and winter guard budgets with oversight/assistance from the lead band director and booster club leadership.
o Effective communication with students, parents, and supervisor regarding all facets of the guard program.
o Participate in weekly staff meetings and development of relationships with staff members.
o The Color Guard Director reports directly to the Lead Band Director and indirectly to the Director of Fine Arts.
QUALIFICATIONS / REQUIREMENTS:
o High School Diploma required; college degree preferred.
o Background in competitive marching band guard performance, including extensive experience in flag, rifle, sabre, and dance required.
o Background in performing in drums corps and/or independent winter guard preferred.
o Background in drum corps instruction and/or adjudication preferred.
o Experience composing and choreographing color guard performances required.
o Experience working with school-aged students required.
The Guard Director position if that of full-time employment, including time-off, benefits, and an annual retention stipend (pending Board of Education approval). Compensation is commensurate with experience.
